A elderly Uniontown area man was killed Tuesday night in Akron when he drove over an embankment, through a guardrail, onto Interstate 77 and into traffic.

Jim Youngson, 70, of Lake Township, was killed in the 6:40 p.m. crash, said Gary Guenther, chief investigator for the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Guenther said Youngson was driving a 1990 Chevrolet pickup truck south on Coventry Street when he went over a guardrail, down an embankment and into the southbound lanes of the interstate.

“Mr. Youngson then struck several vehicles before striking a concrete barrier,” Guenther said Wednesday.

Youngson was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at 7:25 p.m., he said.

An autopsy was scheduled to take place Wednesday as the medical examiner’s office and Akron police continued to investigate.
