Notes from April 10th Meeting

Barbra SorkinThe meeting for the Uniontown Lions Club on April 10th 2013. King Lion Jim Laverick was absent, traveling for work, 1st Vice President Bob Kendall presided over the meeting. There was an official visit by 2nd Vice District Governor Barbra Sorkin. She congratulated the club on having over 60 members and good attendance for the meeting. Sorkin received laughs when she mentioned that Lion Ed Cikity was performing so well as Tail Twister that she might tap him as a speaker for an upcoming leader conference when she become District Governor.  2nd Vice District Governor Barbra Sorkin reminded the club about the Spring Leadership conference on April 27th and a District social in May. The 2nd Vice District Governor also announced that the club would receive a patch for the banner if all major officers attended the Spring Conference.

A letter was read as a part of the external communication recognizing the memorial day recognition of veterans and expressing disappointment at the lack of recognition of veterans of all wars. It was pointed out that the Memorial Day program was ran by the Uniontown Community Park and not the Lions Club. The letter was signed anonymously so it would be difficult to respond directly to the concerns but the letter will be passed on to the park board.

During the committee reports Lion Mark Troyer reminded the club that the Uniontown Lions Club Festival will be held August 7-10 2013 and that there could be a festival committee meeting on April 24 after the regular meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30.

From the King lions Notebook – A great weekend in March!

Friday evening the Uniontown Lions got together and set up for the 26th Reverse Raffle fund raiser. Lots of logistics here but well thought out. It went smoothly.  Saturday Bob Jones, Mike Miller, with Dr Kail and me, did a presentation in one of the Break-Out rooms for the District Lions Convention in Canton. This is our opportunity to show to other clubs in our district what and how we do the eyeglass recycling.  Then more important Dr Kail shared his efforts in Third World countries dispensing our glasses that we have processed and others have collected.  This was our second convention that we have been ask to participate in.  We welcomed the opportunity.

Then on to Saturday evening and the Reverse Raffle.  What a night!  Over 170 prizes were awarded to ticket holders. The food was great.  And the beverages as well.  A lot of work by the committee but very rewarding when we see the results raising money for our community.  Special thanks to the co-chair Lions, Mindy and Ron for organizing a flawless event enjoyed by all.

A very spiritual family, performing both gospel and blue grass music. Very exciting musical evening enjoyed by all.

From the King Lions Notebook – January 2012

The New Year of 2012 is off to a flying start!  On Wednesday January 11th we had the pleasure of hosting District Governor Dave Gauch’s visit and the swearing in 5 new Uniontown Lions Members.  Our population is currently at 61.

The Annual Reverse Raffle is in the final stages of the planning session. Always a lot of fun but sadly all 200 tickets are spoken for. As always the contribution of $60.00 per ticket is one of the best bargains around.

Our next bus trip is currently being finalized.  We are going South this time and Canada in the fall – more lately.

The Club donated 180 pair of glasses to a missionary in Swaziland last week.  Same as last year. Our Club has been asked to do a presentation of our eye glass recycling program at the up-coming District Convention being held in Canton on March 16, 17, 18.  Dr Kail is also planning to attend if his schedule allows.

We did deliver 2100 pair of cleaned, repaired, and RX identified to Dr. Kail’s office earlier.  He and his team leave for Honduras on the 27th of this month.  Our thoughts and prayers go with them.

The ‘Adopt a Highway’ program has been approved once again by ODOT.  We are waiting on a safety session from them late February.

Working with the Hartville Lions Club, we join forces to purchase 2 new electronic eye charts, used by the Lake School District, to give eye exams to the K-1-3-5 grade students annually. These gifts will be used in both Uniontown as well as Hartville buildings.

The Annual Spouses Night is being held on February 2ed this year at the Hartville Kitchen. Always a great evening

That’s it for now

Branson MissouriWell, after nearly 1,800 miles, 300 gallons of diesel fuel, 67,000 calories, (we grazed all the way out and back) all are back from the latest Uniontown Lions sponsored bus trip to Branson MO.  Lion John Birk and his committee, once again put together a great 7 day 6 night trip to the Ozarks.

This may be the first time in any of the bus trips Lion John has put together- where we came home with fewer guests than we left with! (2 guests got off in Indianapolis and will be returning with relatives)  otherwise we are all accounted for.

We were treated to 9 great shows, a trip to the St. Louis MO. Arch, a visit to the Indianapolis Speedway Museum, Lincoln Library, Bass Pro Shop and many, many fabulous dinners.

This was our first bus trip with this great committee’s projects – and I assure you not our last. If you are interested in any additional information on the next planned trip, let us know and I’ll pass on the information to you.

Well, we are off to a fast start for sure. As usual the Uniontown Lions Club has a full calendar of events already scheduled for the year.

We just had a very successful Annual Family Picnic complete with $100.00 in door prizes.

Next up is the District 13D Zone Meeting in Sebring Ohio on the 20th of Sept. All clubs report their activities to the other clubs to share. A good time for clubs to share ideas. Looking forward- the next quarters (Oct-Nov-Dec)

Lions Calendars will be ready for our next meeting (09.28.11) and POOOF! There goes another year.

Stay safe

—until next time
